Deck & Fence Painting – Oakley, CA

Oakley has grown significantly in recent years with master-planned subdivisions along Laurel Road and near Big Break. Most newer homes run cedar or pressure-treated pine fencing with standard 6-foot board-on-board panels and concrete pool decks or pressure-treated wood pool surrounds. Redwood perimeter fences appear in older agricultural-conversion neighborhoods near downtown. We work on redwood, cedar, pressure-treated pine, and composite decking (Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon). Flat lots and open exposure mean full sun hits all fence faces, so UV degradation is even across the board — no shaded sections getting a pass here.

We start with a thorough pressure wash — full UV-exposed surfaces in Oakley's sun build surface oxidation and debris that needs to come off before staining. After washing, we allow 48-to-72 hours of dry time. We sand rough grain, set or replace popped fasteners, and replace any cracked or soft boards before product goes down. For penetrating stains we use TWP (Total Wood Preservative), Penofin, or Ready Seal — all tested performers on cedar and redwood in high-UV Delta climates. Solid color work runs Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck or Benjamin Moore Arborcoat. Pool deck surrounds get additional attention at drainage edges and post bases where water sits.

In Oakley's heat, penetrating oil stains perform well on cedar and redwood — they absorb into the wood rather than forming a surface film, so they handle thermal expansion and contraction without peeling. The tradeoff is a 2-to-3-year refresh cycle. Solid color coatings (SuperDeck, Arborcoat) extend the interval slightly and deliver a more uniform finished appearance — a common choice for newer pressure-treated pine fencing where grain isn't the visual priority. For pool decks that need a slip-resistant surface, we specify pool-deck-rated coatings rather than standard deck stain.

Fence linear footage is the main driver — Oakley lots in master-planned communities can run 150-plus feet of perimeter fence. Pool deck square footage and the complexity of the surround (steps, coping edges, post bases) add scope. Board condition matters: cracked cedar rails or soft pressure-treated posts need carpentry before staining adds time. Prior finish type affects prep requirements — old film coatings need more aggressive prep before a penetrating stain will absorb.

We recently stained a full redwood perimeter fence at an older Oakley property near downtown — pressure-washed, 60-hour dry, sanded, and two coats of TWP 100 in a light cedar tone. Also finished a pressure-treated pool deck surround in a newer subdivision near Neroly Road: washed, dried, and coated with Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck solid in a weathered gray. Both jobs completed in two days.
