Deck & Fence Painting – Auburn, CA

Auburn properties range from older Victorian and craftsman structures in the historic downtown and Old Town neighborhoods to newer custom and tract homes east of Highway 49 and into the Lake of the Pines corridor. Wood substrates vary accordingly: redwood and old-growth cedar on historic structures, newer cedar and pressure-treated pine on foothill custom homes. Pine pollen season (February through April) deposits heavy particulate on all horizontal surfaces — decks especially — that needs to come off before staining. We work on redwood, cedar, pressure-treated pine, and composite decking (Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon).

We schedule around pollen season where possible — staining before the main deposit or after a thorough wash and dry following its peak. Every job starts with a pressure wash to remove pollen, surface debris, and old oxidized finish. After washing, we allow 48-to-72 hours of dry time before any product goes on. We sand rough grain, pull or reset popped fasteners, and replace cracked or soft boards. For penetrating stains we use TWP (Total Wood Preservative), Penofin, or Ready Seal — all solid performers on cedar and redwood under high foothill UV. Solid color work uses Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck or Benjamin Moore Arborcoat. On older historic structures we're deliberate about prep to avoid damaging original wood.

Foothill UV at Auburn's elevation is intense — more direct sun angle and less atmospheric filtering than Sacramento Valley. That shortens stain life: plan on a 2-to-3-year cycle for penetrating stains (TWP, Penofin, Ready Seal) and closer to 3-4 years for solid color systems. Penetrating stains are the standard choice on cedar and redwood, particularly on older historic structures where the grain is part of the aesthetic. Newer pressure-treated pine fencing near Lake of the Pines often goes solid color — the grain isn't a visual priority and a solid coat handles UV load without showing as much of the pine's tendency to check and crack as it ages.

Board condition is a significant variable in Auburn's older housing stock — Victorian and craftsman-era wood that has been through many refinish cycles can have surface irregularities, old paint layers, or soft sections that require more prep. Newer foothill homes are typically more straightforward. Deck square footage and fence linear footage are the baseline. Pine pollen timing can affect scheduling — a job after pollen peak needs a heavier wash, which adds prep time. Slope and terrain on hillside lots adds setup.

We recently prepped and stained a cedar deck on a property near the Auburn State Recreation Area: heavy pollen wash, 60-hour dry, two coats of TWP 100 in a natural cedar tone. Also refinished a redwood fence on an older Old Town Auburn property — soft-wash to protect the grain, 48-hour dry, and two coats of Penofin in a redwood tone. Both jobs ran two to three days.
